#1 How To Do A Short Hair Updo

If you need a video that shares the why behind what is done this one's for you! Full of lots of little tips and ideas you can actually use to up your styling game. From how to tell if you're using the right bobby pins and where to get the right ones to how to use them where in this style. It's well worth watching.

Hair Cut: Fine, shoulder grazing strands
Styled as: Quick and Easy Updo

Must Know Trick: Shows how to use halo extensions to get the fullness your natural hair may lack.

The Mane Moves:
This updo starts life as a tiny ponytail on her crown. From there the weft is added right in front of the pony and held in place with four bobby pins all around. Next she gathers all the hair, including the extennies, into her ponytail. It's all held in place by an invisibobble.

She explains your options for styling the remaining hair. And goes into how she uses Aveda Firmata Firm Hold Hair Spray (Amazon link) for holding things in place.

BTW, if you're not familiar with the weird looking invisibobble she used, the article we wrote reveals all you need to know about them.

#2 How To Do A Chignon With Short Hair

Here's a quick and pretty chignon anyone can do in five minutes or less using a few elastics and bobby pins. Proving once again that elegance doesn't have to be hard or time consuming.

Hair Length: Beach Waves Grazing the Collarbone
Styled as: Low Chignon.

Must Know Trick: Tieing off the end of the ponytail so you have something to tuck back into the gap. (That will make more sense once you watch the video.) A small thing. But it gives you something to work with.

The Mane Moves:
Back comb in the back and a couple sections around the crown to create some sexy lift and volume.

Make a ponytail in the back and tie it off with an elastic. Split it in half at the base right above the elastic and pull your pony through that gap to create a topsy tail. Tug on the pony just the least little bit to create the twist that makes this look go.

Tie off the very end your short pony tail. Shove that end of that back into the gap. Secure with bobby pins. Spread the rolled over hair to form the low chignon.

Tug the hair around the crown to volumize a little.

Secure with a spritz or two of light weight hair spray.

So quick and simple yet exquisitely elegant.

#3 Short Hair Ponytail Hairstyles, Anyone?

With this one no curling is needed yet you end up with a look that's pretty, posh and playful.

Hair Cut: Long straight bob
Styled as: Cute perky short hair ponytail

Must Know Trick: Girls with fine hair will want to use products to generate an extra dose of body in two ways. First work volumizing mousse in before blow drying. Then apply texturizing spray into the roots.

If you want to know more about texturizing spray check out my post here to find out how to use it to get the best results.

The Mane Moves:
After doing a middle part section your hair on the side above your ear and twist it to the back. Repeat on the other side. Pin the ends in place where they meet in the back of your head. Grab the rest of the hair and do a perky little pony tail. And you're done!

Viola. Short, anything-but-boring ponytail hairstyles like this are the perfect antidote to ordinary hair.

#4 How To Do A Half Bun With Short Hair

Looking for a style that throws off just the right amount of messy, lived in vibe?

This one does just that yet totally rates high on the cuteness meter. It gives you a way do up next day hair that's been slept in but not washed. Yet as the super simple tutorial shows it still looks put together enough to be perfect for short haired girls everywhere.

Hair Cut: Short hair – doesn't even reach her shoulders.
Styled as: Boho bumped half bun with accent twists

Must Know Trick: This video proves not every updo has to be coaxed out of a ponytail.

The Mane Moves:
With this one the styling started with flat iron curling the hair around her face. Dry shampoo is added for texture.

That's followed by a bit of teasing of the hair at the crown in the back. She then smooths over that to set the stage for the bump.

Twist a section of hair on each side, fatten the twist out a little (see the video) then pin in back under the bump.

The hair at the neck line is "bunched" into a tiny bun and pinned. Short stray pieces and baby hairs are also pinned. As she did you can leave some baby strands to stick out on their own for the perfectly imperfect look we all love.

#5 Wanted: Updos For Short Bobbed Hair

For those with long hair an updo is pretty much a no brainer.

But those with a bob that's short in the back need to be one smart hair diva to pull off chic styles like this.

Not to mention the need to know what to do with those short strands that don't seem to want to cooperate. If that's you keep watching.

Hair Cut: A line stacked bob
Styled as: Messy Bun

Must Know Trick: Sometimes it helps to flip your hair over to do the great gathering of the hair into a ponytail. That and taking any too short strands and creating multiple tiny ponytails out of them.

The Mane Moves:
This doable 'do starts in a familiar place. With a ponytail.

Using a second elastic only pull your hair halfway creating a little looped top knot of sorts. Fan it apart to start to create the bun effect.

Gather up the lower section of hair, you guessed it, into another much smaller ponytail. (If that hair is too short it's okay to do up two or three ponytails at the nape of your neck.) Using bobby pins pin that second pony flat, right on the back of your head.

Then pin down any stray odd bits and pieces from the first ponytail and play around with it until you're satisfied.

Done!

#6 Top Knot For Short Hair

This one proves the rule that if you have enough hair to fashion a ponytail you've got enough hair for a bun or top knot. Even though you may have to be a bit creative with the twisting, coiling and wrapping – basically if there's a will there's a way.

Hair Cut: Beach waves that are shoulder grazing in the front a bit longer in the back.
Styled as: Messy Top Knot Bun

Must Know Trick: To shape your bun tug from opposite sides until you get the shape and size you were going for. Then pin in place with bobby pins.

The Mane Moves:
This one's 90 seconds quick and simple. And so high it also qualifies as a top knot.

Pull your hair into a high pony tail after a spritz of dry shampoo to refresh and to add texture. Then twist the pony tail around to form your bun.

Once you've created it any stray pieces can be tucked underneath the bun. Then secure with a hair tie.

This will give you a top knot or maybe what some might call a ballerina bun. However you can loosen it as she did to make it as big and casual and as bun-like as you like pinning it in place with bobby pins. Giving you a softer yet sophisticated style.

#7 Here's How To Make A High Bun With Short Hair

The obvious bad news is a cool high bun with short hair isn't going to be as easy to style as it might be for those working with 12 inches or more of hair. The good news this 'do still isn't that hard if you know a trick or two.

Hair Cut: Straight Barely Shoulder Length
Styled as: Slicked Back High Bun

Must Know Trick: Using a sock bun instead of a foam bun maker.

The Mane Moves:
After combing out the tangles, apply hair spray and gather you mane into a very high ponytail. Secure with an elastic. Pin up any stray baby hairs in the back. Then slip your sock bun over the ponytail and drape the hair all around it gently teasing for volume.

Redistribute the hair all around your bun maker then squeeze an elastic over it and your hair to make the your bun.

Finally wrap any loose ends around the base and pin in place.

And yeah, this video should come with a warning about possible hairspray overdose. There may be other ways to control flyaways.

Three Short Hair Updos Tutorials In One

Hair Length: Waves Grazing her Collarbone
Styled as: This video reveals three unique yet ways to style your short hair that's are just the cutest ever!

Updo#1:
This is a controlled chaos look that's so cute. Best of all it looks way more complicated than it is!

Part your hair to the side

Create a ponytail using the crown section of your hair. Create a hole in front of the elastic and loop the rest of the pony through that hole – ala a topsy tail

Grab some hair near the crown on one side and twist it back and over the elastic pinning the ends on the opposite site of your head. Gently loosen the twist to fluff things up a bit. Repeat on the other side starting with a section of hair about as high up as the first one.

Continue grabbing sections on down your head and repeat the process. Stop once you've reached the hair just below your ear. That should be like two more twisted sections on each side which creates an intricate looking style in the back.

Note how each new twist hides the previous section's bobby pins.

Also note how she has left some wispy pieces to hang and frame her face. It's a neat trick to remember with any updo.

Then gather the lower hair that's left and create a messy bun out of it held together with, you guessed it, lots of bobby pins. Because, well, your hair is too short for an elastic.

Updo#2:
The second style, consists of side braids with chignon. The 'do's topped off with baby's breath and starts at position 3:14. It is just adorable.

This one features a little pancaked Dutch crown braid on each side of her head that the rolled hair is tucked behind to fashion the chignon. Pin as needed to hold the rolled hair in place.

Oh and if pancaking braids is not a technique you're familiar with we wrote a nifty article that tells you all you'll ever need to know about it.

So she does the little braids, secures the ends in the back with a hair tie, then uses her remaining hair to create the chignon.

This was then topped off with the baby's breath

You might pay attention to how she did the braid and still kept her bangs in play with this style.

Updo#3:
The third style starts around the six minute mark. Spoiler alert. The one consists of three little buns one on top of the other. Pure genius!

First she does a middle part and then used the hair at the crown to fashion a rope braid. That braid is then coiled into a bit of a bun and pinned into place.

Taking hair a little lower she repeats.

Using the lowest strands she does the same thing one more time.

See? Who says styling options are limited with shorter hair?

Which one of the three is your fav?
